Albany Medical Center, citing financial woes in 2022, has eliminated 37 positions at its Albany location.
A letter from Albany Med President/CEO Dr. Dennis McKenna, sent to employees Wednesday, said the issues -- which Albany Med officials later said was a $66 million operating loss this year to date -- has led to "an organizational restructure, primarily in management roles" and the elimination of positions. Other positions will not be refilled following retirements.
"These decisions are exceptionally difficult," McKenna said in the letter. "They are necessary to protect our future as an independent health system with the highest quality care in our region."
Albany Med Vice President of Communications and Marketing Matt Markham said that the positions eliminated were mostly in management and non-clinical positions, "and did not include any frontline clinical workers" and added the financial loss was "unprecedented" in the system's 180-year history.
