With confirmed coronavirus cases going up across the state, deep cleaning and disinfecting is a top priority at the Capital District Transportation Authority. Every three days now on all buses, instead of every two weeks, surfaces are getting an extra wipe — on top of the regular cleaning at the end of each day.
"It's only been a couple of days but you can tell there's a heightened sense of awareness," said Carm Basile, CEO of CDTA.
He says that's happening among employees and customers, which is why Basile says extra precautions are being taken.
"To wipe down all surfaces, to do our best to disinfect them from any germ, any virus," Basile said.
"Any little step is a step in the right direction," said Janelle Robinson, an Albany resident waiting for the bus on Friday.
Additional measures are also being taken at the Albany–Rensselaer Station. Counters, seats, and ticketing machines are also getting deep cleaning and disinfecting daily.
"The things people touch regularly," Basile said.
He says if riders don't feel well, they should stay home. Also, Basile says people should cough and sneeze into their sleeves. He says these extra steps are taken to protect passengers and drivers.
"The [people] of the world have to take care of themselves, and do a lot better for each other," said Brian Fordham, an Albany resident.
Amtrak announced on Friday there are no change fees on reservations made through April 30.
