Next month, students will have the opportunity to learn the “Fundamentals of Baking" at SUNY Schenectady. It’s a 12-credit course that Chef Susan Hatalsky has helped conceptualize.

“They would probably qualify at an entry level in a bake shop, in a hotel bakery, in a restaurant bakery, and also a candy shop or a confection shop," said Hatalsky.

The course is offered as a stand-alone course or in addition to the students’ existing foundational curriculum. For some of the students, this program provides the important skills needed to find employment after college.

“They teach you practically everything from the ground up and they work with you really well,” said student Alexis Schrom, “and they can always kind of help you when you need it. And the teachers and the chefs are always so kind and helpful in every way possible.”
