Albany City School District officials say a committee is being formed to create a policy that will address the naming and renaming of district buildings and facilities.
Board of Education President Anne Savage and Superintendent Kaweeda Adams made the announcement Friday.
The first project for the committee will be to rename Phillip J. Schuyler Achievement Academy. The newly formed committee will be led by Schuyler Academy's community coordinator Michael Poindexter, who says he wants everyone's input as the renaming process gets underway.
"This is a collaborative community effort that we are seeking out to change something that has systemically impacted children of color and impacted our entire community," Poindexter said.
Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan announced last week that a statue of Phillip Schuyler at City Hall would be removed.
Schuyler was a member of the Continental Congress, a general, a senator, and an advisor to George Washington. He also owned more than a dozen enslaved people, making him one of the most prominent slave owners in the Capital Region.
The committee will evaluate the history behind each district building's name - and consider changes as necessary.
