For the first time its 83-year history, Siena College officials say the school's next president will not be a friar.
This comes following the death of Brother Ed Coughlin last summer.
Former Siena President, Father Kevin Mullen, made the announcement in a YouTube video Tuesday afternoon.
Father Mullen made it known that the decision was made based on the candidates' qualifications for the job, and not restricted to religion.
"While this does represent a departure from tradition, it in new way dilutes Siena's greatest tradition,” Mullen said.
Although he is not identifying who the next president is, Fr. Mullen said this person has great spiritual conviction and understands the value of a Franciscan education.
There’s word yet on when an official announcement of the person will be made.
