Albany County reported 12 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, with four of them linked to the University at Albany.

County Executive Dan McCoy says since Friday, the county has seen 87 new cases, with 60 of them tied to college students.

Health Commissioner Elizabeth Whalen says the data is ever-changing, and each new case requires a full investigation. That's why sometimes, she said, county data and campus data don't perfectly line up.

Whalen says her department is working to see what the source of cases may be. That may be a campus activity, a class, or a gathering.

But Whalen also noted a lot of the cases being reported are students living off campus, which would not play a role in reaching the 100-case threshold for colleges to switch to remote learning.

Whalen also says that while the DOH guidelines zero in on specific static two-week windows for 100 cases, the county is also keeping an eye on the rolling data.
