Layoffs are hitting the Albany school district.
The teachers’ union said Monday that 23 non-tenured probationary staff positions were cut. The Albany Public School Teachers’ Association says the positions are from kindergarten to 12th grade, and no tenured teachers were let go.
Union President Laura Franz says this is the result of budget shortfalls due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A school district spokesperson says the district is working to close a $15 million budget gap, noting they are "evaluating administrative, faculty and support staff positions throughout the organization. We have proposed reductions in all areas."
