An Albany County nursing home has reported a pair of deaths due to the coronavirus.

County Executive Dan McCoy said Tuesday morning that Shaker Place Rehabilitation and Nursing Center had two men in their 80s die in the past couple of days, both with underlying health conditions.

McCoy said that, despite the deaths, the nursing home and others in the county are doing what they can to avoid what they say is a trend with other nursing homes throughout the country.

"Unfortunately, we are seeing ... nursing homes contain our most vulnerable residents," said County Health Commissioner Dr. Elizabeth Whalen. "We are aware that they are doing appropriate control measures."

Throughout Albany County, there are 678 positive cases, up 22 from Monday. There are now 754 people under mandatory quarantine, down 30 from Monday, with 41 under precautionary quarantine (a rise of 11).

The county rolled out its updated COVID-19 tracker dashboard Tuesday, with both McCoy and Whalen breaking down updated numbers.

McCoy highlighted the breakdown of cases by age range, noting that the number of 20- to 29-year-olds with the coronavirus is higher than the number of 60- to 69-year-olds. Whalen said they're seeing the most cases in the 50-59 age range, but added there are cases in all decades of life.

"It stresses the importance that, at all stages of life, you are vulnerable to COVID-19," she noted.
