Snow may come as a bit of a shock this time of the year, but it's not out of the ordinary.

What You Need To Know

  • Heavy wet snow is expected for the Berkshires and Greens this week

  • It'll snow in Albany, but it won't stick

  • Albany has seen accumulating snow into late May before

It may be hard to believe that after two consecutive days of sunshine and highs in the 60s that some spots will see accumulating snow Thursday night into Friday.

The 11th hole at Frear Park Wednesday morning- Troy, NY

I was one of probably hundreds on the golf course Wednesday. It was absolutely perfect. Warm, but not hot, with barely a breeze.

I bogeyed the par-5 11th hole, which should be a birdie hole for me. I'll blame it on being preoccupied by the dread I had of going on TV later in the evening. You don't need me to tell you that going from 60s and sunshine to rain and wet snow does not go over well with most.

It's hard for snow to stick this time of the year, given the sun angle and warmer ground temperatures. It's likely that Albany will measure under a half-inch of snow from this storm, and even if we see that half-inch, we'll still be below average for the month.

This time of the year, it's usually all about elevation when it comes to snow, and that's exactly the case with this next storm. Heavy, wet snow is expected in the mountains, especially in the Greens and Berkshires. I actually wouldn't be surprised if some spots in the Greens saw up to a foot.

Don't be surprised if the Capital Region wakes up to some wet flakes Friday morning. Again, none of this is going to stick in the valleys and the majority of precipitation will fall as rain.

While it won't be pleasant to be outside Thursday and Friday, this rain is much needed. Albany is below average for the month by about an inch and for the year by about three and a half inches.

So will this be the final time we see flakes fly in the 518? Probably not. The latest Albany has seen measurable snowfall is May 28.

As we all know, snow can fly in the mountains well into the spring. Hopefully we won't see snow in the Adirondacks in June like last year!
