We’re FINALLY at the end of an awful stretch of weather which has featured highs in the 30s & 40s along with accumulating mountain snow.
It’s not uncommon for it to snow across the mountains of upstate New York in May. With that being said, no one wants to hear the S word 2 weeks away from Memorial Day, known to many as the unofficial start to summer.
Speaking of Memorial Day weekend, it was only in 2013 when a heavy, wet snowstorm wreaked havoc in the Adirondacks the day before Memorial Day. The high peaks region of the Adirondacks saw 1-3 feet of snow from late Saturday into Sunday. Some areas on Whiteface Mountain reported up to 36 inches of snow!
As you might imagine, this had many campers and hikers waking up a bit surprised Sunday morning.
The lower elevations typically don’t see much snow in May, but it does happen sporadically. The latest measurable snowfall in Albany is May 28, which occurred in 1952. The most snowfall in the month of May is 5.4 inches in 1945.

Despite a record low maximum temperature of 48 degrees in Albany Tuesday, the first half of this month has been pretty average in the temperature department, but also pretty wet.
Thankfully, it looks like we’re going to see temperatures more typical of mid to late May over the next week and a half. 👍
