March was the first month of the year with below average precipitation.

What You Need To Know

  • The Buffalo Airport picked up 9.3 inches of snow in March

  • It got warm as 71 degrees and as cold as 11 degrees last month

  • We broke no records during the month of March

March 20 may have marked the beginning of astronomical spring, but old man winter still made an appearance from time to time.

Measurable snow fell 15 times last month, with the most stacking up on March 27. The day featured 2.3 inches of fresh snow at the airport.

Buffalo picked up 9.3 inches of snow last month, that’s almost 5 inches below the monthly average.

As for the running snowfall total, Buffalo sat at 95.2 inches by the end of last month. That’s a couple of inches above average.

In terms of rain and snow, Buffalo saw 2.21 inches of precipitation last month, which is about two-thirds of an inch below average.

March is the first month of the year to feature below average precipitation. But, that doesn’t mean we got a lot of sunshine.

Only two days were fair at the Buffalo Airport last month. Partly cloudy conditions took up 12 days, and the other 17 went down as cloudy.

Switching gears to temperatures now, there were only 7 days that temperatures stayed below average.

But for each of those 7 days, you felt that winter-like chill to the air as temperatures ran a solid 5 to 18 degrees below average. One of those days was March 28 when Buffalo only got up to 23 degrees.

That was Buffalo’s second coldest high temperature for this late in the season ever, only behind the 22 degree day from April 6, 1982.

On the flip side, there were 6 days where temperatures at least cracked into the 60s. That’s 3 more days than normal.

The warmest day ended up being March 18 when Buffalo hit a high of 71. That was only 4 degrees shy of tying the record from 10 years ago.

The monthly average came in at 38.3 degrees. Compared to the last 30 years, that ended up being 4.2 degrees above average.

However, it was two degrees cooler than last March’s average.

We did not break snow, rain or temperature records last month too.
