National Grid says it is increasing staffing and extending shifts due to expected strong winds across much of Western and Central New York. Winds could gust up to 65 mph through Sunday evening.

Gusts of 60 to 65 mph will have the potential to take down tree branches and trees, damage power lines and cause power outages.

The power company is offering some safety tips for residents, including:

  • Never touch downed power lines. You can report downed lines to National Grid at 1-800-867-5222 or call 911.
  • Keep working flashlights and extra batteries handy.
  • Charge your electronic devices before the harsh weather arrives.
  • Use caution when driving near emergency responders and power crews.

Customers can notify National Grid online if an outage occurs. They can also text ‘OUT’ to 64743.
