BUFFALO, N.Y. — Dozens of mourners entered Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in downtown Buffalo on Monday to pay their final respects to Katherine Massey.
U.S. Rep. Brian Higgins was among the elected leaders seen entering the church.
Massey was one of 13 people shot just over a week ago at the Tops supermarket on Jefferson Avenue in Buffalo. Ten of those people died from their injuries.
A moment of silence was held Sunday in honor of all the victims.
Massey was said to be doing some grocery shopping for her sister at the time of the shooting. The 72-year-old is being remembered as a local civil rights advocate in her community. She was born in raised in the Queen City.
Massey had a lot of friends but was a part of the infamous three musketeers.
Another of those musketeers, Betty Jean Grant, spoke with Spectrum News 1.
Grant reminisced about her friendship. Someone she said was a mentor to her and a champion for her community. Someone who will be missed for so many reasons.
“Her love for this community. Her unconditional love for this community. That’s all I can say," said Grant. "For her unconditional love for her community and her people. We’re going to miss that.”
