Redevelopment of the former Westwood Country Club in Amherst is moving ahead, despite opposition from several people.

The Amherst Town Board voted on a deal with Mensch Capital Partners, which owns the former Westwood Country Club.

In the deal, the town will acquire the club in exchange for a sports field and portion of the Audubon golf course.

The town would pay more than $45,000 an acre for the 170-acre property and Mensch would pay Amherst about $220,000 an acre for 38 acres.

During the meeting several people said they were not given a chance to weigh in on the agreement or learn how it could affect their taxes.

"We, the taxpayers of Amherst, deserve to know all the financial answers to this huge project and before the agreement is even considered, let alone voted on,” said resident Jay Dipaquale. “This agreement needs to be rewritten with specifics, and an agreement that is in our best interest, not the developers."

The board tweaked some of the language in the deal and all voted in favor.

A vote on the formal sale and purchase agreement will happen at a later date.
