He’s been the talk of the town this week.
Western New York native Joe Andreessen, the Buffalo Bills rookie linebacker, is trying to surprise many and make his hometown team.
Andreessen was the star of the show in last weekend’s game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, leading the team in tackles when he got the chance to start due to injuries.
The former Lancaster High School and University at Buffalo star has impressed many — including his defensive coordinator, Bobby Babich.
“For a guy that came from his upbringing in football and to be a tryout player to go into that situation that he was in, I mean he was going against NFL starters. It’s just really cool to see,” said Babich. “I think you just see the professionalism and how smart he is and obviously he showed some things in that game.”
Andreessen might’ve been considered a long shot when he came in for a rookie tryout in the spring, but he’s putting himself in the conversation at least to make the roster or the practice squad.
“It’s that working while you wait,” said Babich. “He didn’t get a ton of reps in training. Obviously, now his reps have picked up with player availability at that position. When he has had his opportunity, it’s been solid. But it’s one game. It’s one game. The true sign of a pro is consistency, so that’s what we’ve got to see out of all our players.”
Andreessen will have another shot to make a big impression on Saturday when the Bills finish off the preseason against the Panthers with roster cuts looming next week.
