Hayley Scamurra is the lone WNY representative on the 2022 Women’s National team roster after Emily Matheson was cut. The rosters were announced at the conclusion of the Women’s National Festival at Harborcenter, where USA hockey hosted 116 players competing for spots on the national team, Collegiate and U18 Select rosters for upcoming tournaments.

Getzville-native Scamurra will be chasing her third world championship medal in four years after taking home gold in 2019 and silver in 2021. The lefty rounds out the senior generation on the roster, led by Hilary Knight and Kendall Coyne Schofield.

Four Western New Yorkers were named to the Collegiate Select roster and will compete against Canada in a three-game series this week. All four have medal-grade experience on the U18 National team.

Hayley Winn, from Rochester, has won two medals already with the national program — silver in 2019 and gold in 2020. She tallied four assists total in 10 IIHF world championship contests. The right-shot defenseman is heading to Clarkson University this fall. She is the youngest of the four WNYers on the roster.

Natalie Buchbinder hails from Fairport and was one of 28 invited to the Olympic Residency Program in 2022. She’s experienced at the championship level — not only has she joined the National Team for the 2021 IIHF world championships, but she has been to two NCAA championships with the Badgers (2019 and 2021) and took home three titles with powerhouse prep school Shattuck-St. Mary’s from 2015 to 2017. Buchbinder is a senior leader on this roster and will be leaned on by younger players.

Buchbinder’s Shattuck teammate Maureen Murphy comes from similar pedigree and has earned significant Hockey East recognition between playing for Providence and Northeastern. The forward scored one goal as a member of the 2017 gold medal U18 squad and has played in multiple Select series against Canada.

Lastly, Kiara Zanon from Fairport has been working hard at Penn State in between national recognitions. The forward was the fastest Nittany Lion to tally 50 points in 39 career games, and leads their roster averaging 1.27 PPG after her sophomore season. She also took home two worlds medals with the U18 teams in 2019 and 2020.

The Collegiate Select roster will play a three-game series against Canada on Aug. 17, 18 and 20. Scamurra and the national team will head to Denmark at the end of the month for the IIHF Women’s World Championship, aiming for gold after taking home silver for back-to-back loses to Canada on both the 2022 Olympic stage and 2021 Worlds.
