It is Primary Day in New York State, the first of two this year. People who are registered with a party can vote for who they want on the general election ballot in November.

The polls are officially open and New Yorkers have the chance to vote in the first of two state primaries.

Both parties will be choosing their candidate for Governor this fall.

On the Democratic side, Western New York’s Kathy Hochul is looking for her first full term as governor of New York. It was about a year ago that she took over for Andrew Cuomo after he resigned from office. But the first step in that goal is to get past candidates Jumaane Williams, a New York City elected public advocate and Representative Tom Suozzi, a congressman from Long Island who represents NY’s third congressional district.

Democrats will also be voting on Lieutenant Governor. Antonio Delgado is running with Governor Hochul, and there is Diana Reyna, who is running with Representative Suozzi, and Ana Maria Archila, who is running with Williams.

For the GOP, endorsed candidate, Representative Lee Zeldin, is running against Rob Astorino, who took on Cuomo for the job back in 2014.

Also, there is Harry Wilson, who previously ran for state comptroller, and Andrew Giuliani, the son of New York City’s former mayor and Trump administration official Rudy Giuliani.

And there are also several local elections people should keep their eyes on. In Erie County there is the primary for County Clerk between Mickey Kearns and Eden Town Supervisor Melissa Hartman.

Polls close at 9 p.m. tonight.
