BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo mayoral candidates fielded questions Wednesday as early voting continues and as Election Day fast approaches.

Democratic primary winner India Walton and write-in candidates Byron Brown and Benjamin Carlisle addressed numerous issues including public safety, police reform, education and housing during their second debate at St. Joseph’s Collegiate Institute.

"I don't see Ms. Walton as a Democrat,” Brown said. “If you look at publications she has been in all across the country, she's described as a socialist and I think her ideas for the city of Buffalo are bad at best and unworkable."

"I am a self-avowed democratic socialist,” Walton explained. “The first word in that is Democrat. What socialism means is that I want the same things that most of us want. I want safe, stable [and] affordable housing. I want quality education for my children. I want people to have access to health care. I want folks to be healthy, happy and safe."

"We need to bring everyone back to the center,” Carlisle said. “I'm not so concerned anymore about terms, Republican or Democrat. Right now, I rally around good ideas not around ideology. These days I rally around good leaders, not politicians."
