Marine Drive Apartment residents are getting a little more time to prepare for a 10 percent rent increase.
Former Buffalo Municipal Housing Authority Commissioner and Marine Drive resident Joe Mascia said residents received a letter on August 31 about the rent hike that was originally slated to take effect October 1.
He and others said that was not enough time and he had even hired an attorney to put a temporary restraining order on the rent increase.
"We have residents here who are on a fixed income and what do they do,” Mascia said. “Do they feed their family, do they get their medication or do they pay their rent?"
Although BMHA’s executive director said they notified residents as long as two years ago, they have agreed to delay the rent increase until December 1.
They said this will give their tenants time to budget for the increase.
