People in Lockport are demanding answers after a man died in police custody, and the state atttorney general is vowing an investigation.
Protesters gathered at Wednesday’s City Council meeting demanding justice for Troy Hodge.
The 39-year-old died during a confrontation with police on Park Avenue Sunday night.
Officers said Hodge's girlfriend called for help because he was hallucinating and mentioned getting a gun.
They say Hodge suffered a medical issue after struggling with police and he was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The city's police chief and the county's district attorney also attended the meeting, answering questions and promising to find out exactly what happened.
"When this incident occurred, I can guarantee you that nobody involved wanted the result that happened,” said Interim Police Chief Steven Preisch.
"This is a tragedy and we will get to the bottom of it,” said Niagara County District Attorney Caroline Wojtaszek. “You will get all of the answers you have a right to know as a community."
The four officers involved in the incident were placed on administrative leave for three days, which is standard department protocol.
That leave could be extended as the investigation continues.
In a statement released Thursday morning, New York State Attorney General Letitia James's office confirmed it will "assert jurisdiction" in Hodge's death.
"The Office of the Attorney General has determined that we will assert jurisdiction in this matter," a spokesperson said. "We are committed to a thorough and impartial investigation. We will not have any further comment at this time."
