BUFFALO, N.Y. —  Smiles from Veterans Day celebrations have carried over to the weekend at the University at Buffalo.

The University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine hosted the sixth year of its annual Dentistry Smiles for Veterans program on Saturday.

The event provides a day of free dental care to about 200 Western New York veterans.

There are many veterans who lack dental insurance or don't qualify for dental treatment through the Veterans Health Administration.

"We love to help veterans out for a day," said the assistant dean for clinical operations in the UB School of Dental Medicine Brendan Dowd. "Take out a couple teeth. Do some fillings, cleanings. Exams, x-rays. But the key is to find a dental home. And that's what is great about this event. Is that we got over 400 veterans that are now patients of record and come here routinely for their dental care."

UB says they had over 200-Buffalo-area dentists and hygienists working Saturday.

Veterans were also able to receive free health screenings from nursing students and faculty.
