Very hot and humid conditions continue for this Independence Day in North Carolina.

What You Need To Know

  • High temperatures will top out in the 90s in much of the state

  • The humidity will make it feel more like 100 to 105 in some areas

  • The heat could fuel isolated strong storms

High temperatures will top out in the 90s across most of North Carolina on Tuesday, except for the higher elevations of the mountains.

The humidity will make it feel around 10 degrees hotter than the actual temperature.

The heat index, or feels like temperature, will range between 100 and 105 in many locations.

The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory for locations that have the greatest risk of feeling like 105.

Anytime the heat index reaches near 105, we all become more susceptible to heat-related illnesses like heat exhaustion and even heat stroke.

The effects of heat on our health are cumulative, so a few days of the dangerously hot weather can put us at an even higher risk of heat-related illness.

If you have work to do outside, it would be best to schedule it in the morning to avoid the hottest part of the day. Take frequent breaks in the shade.

It’s also important that we all stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.

Don’t forget to check on your neighbors as well. Older adults, children and pets can be especially susceptible to the heat.

Severe weather threat

In addition, the hot and humid weather could also fuel a few storms during the afternoon and evening. While the storms will be isolated, those that develop could produce downpours, frequent lightning and strong wind gusts.
