Tornadoes hit at least a couple of communities in North Carolina Thursday afternoon, and as of Friday morning some damage was discovered in Durham County and Anson County.

What You Need To Know

  • Damage reported near the Anson and Stanly County line was caused by a brief tornado

  • A tornado also touched down in southeastern Durham County

  • The National Weather Service is surveying damage in both areas Friday

The National Weather Service found EF-2 damage near Polkton from Thursday's storms. That survey team will have additional information later today.

Some of the first reports of storm damage Thursday came in from Stanley and Anson Counties near Norwood.

A roof was blown off a home in the area, chicken houses were destroyed and trees were uprooted. Around the time of that damage, our weather team noted a signature of rotation on radar that indicated a likely tornado.

A survey team also looked at damage that was reported between Raleigh and Durham Thursday afternoon.

They confirmed an EF-1 tornado in Durham County. The tornado snapped numerous trees and dislodged an HVAC unit from a nearby warehouse.

Peak estimated winds were at 100 mph, and the path length was 0.25 miles.

The severe weather threat ended across the entire state Thursday night.

Calmer weather is in the forecast through the weekend.
