HENDERSON, N.C. – Longtime Vance County basketball coach Wilton Baskett, who won his 400th game in February, announced his retirement Friday.

In a Facebook post, and later confirmed by Vance County Athletic Director Joe Sharrow, Baskett said he will step down on March 15.

Baskett, a Vance County native who began his coaching career in 1988, coached at Northern Vance until the county schools were consolidated last year.

“March 13th will be my last day teaching and March 15th my retirement (will be) final,” Baskett said in his Facebook post. “So thanks (to) so many people… mainly my immediate family for riding side by side this (past) 37 years. So it's done, be done, be safe, and take care — it's (been) a blast.”

In a statement, Sharrow said Baskett will be missed.

“It’s hard to even begin to describe how valuable Coach Baskett has been to the students of Vance County Schools,” Sharrow said. “He is a one-of-a-kind individual that has been through it all. While he has delivered many wins and countless championships for our schools over the years, the relationships he made and the mentorship he provided is what he will always be remembered for.

“We are forever grateful for the sacrifices he has made for the betterment of our students, and I can never truly thank him enough for everything he has done. He is the true embodiment of a living local legend in every way.”
