RDU airport improves air travel, despite seasonal slowdown

Avelo airlines changed terminals to create a greater convenience for all travelers and more destinations to Florida

The airport's board updated their sustainability policy too, which looks at best practices for the travel hub's future

The airport served 884,984 passengers in January, which was a big jump from January of 2022, according to a news release from the airport. Officials said that while the amount of travelers is down by 13.7% compared to the busy holiday month of December, it's up nearly 40% from the same time period last year.

Additions and service expansions have also been made at the airport, including Avelo airlines relocating terminals and launching six direct flights from RDU this month. This change helped travelers get greater access to destinations in Florida, such as Fort Lauderdale, Fort Myers, Orlando, Palm Beach, Sarasota and Tampa, airport officials said in the release.

Taxi Taxi, a taxi service at RDU, will continue to provide service to travelers under an agreement approved by the Airport Authority Board. The agreement states that Taxi Taxi will provide curbside, walk-up service and operate a 24-hour call center open 365 days a year.

Taxi demand has remained strong for the airport; Taxi Taxi provided 4,941 trips to the airport and 87,277 trips from the airport, according to a release.

The airport weighs different economic, environmental and social practices as part of their sustainability plan. The airport's policy on this was recently reviewed too, and officials there say this helps keep them on the path to a more sustainable future.

“RDU is thriving as airlines expand and passenger traffic outpaces last year’s levels,” said president and CEO of the Raleigh-Durham Airport, Michael Landguth, in the release.
