FORT BRAGG, N.C. – Fort Bragg has a new leader who is breaking barriers right on the heels of Women's History Month.
Sgt. Maj. Tonya Sims took over as the Command Sgt. Major of the 82nd Airborn on April 1. This makes her the first Black woman to hold the position.
Sgt. Maj. Sims says she hopes to be a good example for those who have been overlooked.
"A lot of individuals again are unseen and unheard. So, [being] afforded the opportunity to serve in this position, gives individuals something to strive for. You let them know that that again there is no limit to what they can and cannot," says Sims.
Sgt. Maj. Sims will have around 1,600 soldiers under her command. She will also has access to around 50,000 soldiers for support if needed.
