NORTH CAROLINA -- The weekend curfew has been lifted for the city of Raleigh.

Businesses braced themselves for protests to turn to mayhem; however, it appears the damage was left to a minimum.

Mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin elaborated in a release on her decision to issue the curfew in the first place, saying:

"After seeing demonstrations turn violent and destructive late into the night last May, it was important to make sure we took every precaution to ensure our community’s safety and security. Issuing a curfew is never an easy decision. But it is important to provide a safe environment for those who want to protest peacefully, while still protecting our downtown residents and businesses from the threat of harm."

According to the release, more than 1,000 people came to downtown Raleigh as part of the protest.

The Raleigh Police Department announced in a statement, fourteen people were arrested Friday night after 10 p.m. as protesters gathered in downtown Raleigh to rally against racial injustice and the shooting of Jacob Blake.

On Saturday night, the event transitioned into a racial justice vigil at Shaw University.

Administrators there urged the need for social change and peaceful protests.
