HOKE COUNTY, NC -- Fort Bragg officials say people are damaging some training areas on post, and it's costing them money and time.
The range control officer on Fort Bragg, Wolf Amacker says because of the coronavirus pandemic, people are visiting Mott Lake -- a training site for soldiers.
Officials say residents in the area are bringing in ATVs and motorcycles, which are causing damage on training sites.
Amacker says the damage caused about $9 million in repairs in 10 years. Officials add that people are also hanging around the lake to swim, boat, and camp -- none of which are allowed.
"There's a high degree of camouflage and concealment," Amacker says. "So when you have unauthorized traffic moving through an area, it's very, very dangerous for the soldiers on Fort Bragg as well as the training."
Officials say they've given out several citations since the pandemic started. Unauthorized visitation is considered a federal offense.
