PARKTON, N.C. --The Green Springs Road Bridge is over 60 years old. It stands above Interstate 95 but doesn't have any access to the highway. On Monday, construction will begin to replace the bridge.

The State Department of Transportation says the span needs to be replaced as part of the project to complete the Fayetteville Outer Loop. The replacment construction is also related to the plan to widen I-95 from four lanes to eight.

It will also be necessary to close both lanes of the Interstate under the old bridge for some nighttime work. That work will only be done on certain pre-scheduled times and the closures will last from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on those days.

People who live near the bridge tell us the work will impact on everyone's ability to get around.

"Most of the cars we have coming through, people going to work. The ones I've talked to they work over around Raeford, so they use this as a cut through coming out of Grays Creek," Victor McDonald said.

According to the DOT, the replacement of the bridge is expected to be done by January of 2021.
