The board of commissioners appointed Charles Noblin Jr. on Monday.
He's set to take the oath of office Wednesday evening.
Noblin Jr.'s appointment comes during the investigation and indictment of suspended sheriff Brindell Wilkins Jr.
Wilkins was suspended in September after he was charged in fallout of a plot to kill a former deputy.
Investigators say they heard Sheriff Wilkins on a recording giving advice on the scheme.
A federal and state investigation is currently underway.
The board of commissioners says until there is a resolution of those felony charges, the suspension will remain in effect.
Noblin Jr. is an 18-year veteran of the sheriff's office, serving as the Sergeant in charge of the Civil Division.
