DURHAM, N.C. -- The Durham Housing Authority is taking steps to help the tenants of McDougald Terrace.

  • High levels of Carbon Monoxide found in some of the 322 occupied units prompted an evacuation
  • Residents who have children two years old and under or are 65 and older have the first choice for hotel rooms
  • The Housing Authority will check all units at McDougald Terrace

High levels of Carbon Monoxide found in some of the 322 occupied units prompted an evacuation.

Some of the residents got a hotel voucher to leave their homes. The housing authority is offering seven days in a local hotel while they check to find the problem in the affected apartments.

Residents who have children two years old and under or are 65 and older have the first choice for hotel rooms.

However, some at the complex say the gesture is too little too late and has already cost at least one life. One resident says a new born died of Carbon Monoxide poisoning after only a few months of living in the building.

The Housing Authority will check all units at McDougald Terrace. They hope to fix the problem within the next week.
