DURHAM, N.C. -- The Durham Fire Department welcomed a new, but familiar, addition to its fleet Saturday.

Rescue One was previously de-commissioned in 2000, but is back in service following a housing ceremony nearly two decades in the making.

The department says Rescue One will be used for the city's most extreme situations.

Spectrum News talked to retired Durham firefighters who say the time is right for a new truck.

"Especially with all the high rises and growth going on in the city, all these apartments, condos, this is absolutely necessary," said Mickey Tezai, a retired Durham firefighter.

Rescue trucks in Durham have a long history.

The first unit was put into service in 1960.
