NORTH CAROLINA – North Carolina’s legislative districts are back in court. This time, who represents you in congress is up for debate.

This lawsuit filed Friday. The plaintiffs claim that NC’s Congressional District violates the equal protection clause and the right to freedom of speech and assembly in the state constitution.

These arguments mirror those made against the state legislative districts this summer. The state legislative districts were ultimately ruled unconstitutional by a three-judge panel.

According to the plaintiff, based on overall vote share, North Carolina Democrats should have won more seats in Congress. Additionally, the congressional districts approved in 2016 cannot be explained by geography or any legitimate redistricting criteria.

State Republican Party Chairman, Michael Watley, issued this statement, "This is yet another effort by a party to tie the state up in expensive legal shenanigans because they lost at the Supreme Court of the United States. Instead of working to win on their opponent's maps, as Republicans did, they're now trying to get an unelected body to draw lines to ensure their victory. This isn't about fair maps; It's about Democrats judge-shopping in order to subvert  democracy."
