In March 2019, CSX Transportation, the railroad company, made improvements to a few crossings in the area. The project then added a larger hump to get through the intersection of Gillespie and Russell Streets.
A spokesperson with the North Carolina Department of Transportation said they plan to hire an on-call contractor. In the meantime, a sign on Gillespie Street warns drivers of a rough crossing ahead.
"That's crazy because when I first saw them do it, I said it's going to be too many people complaining," Fayetteville resident, Felicia Renfro said. "A couple of people have come by here and went down and their front ends are messed up. But I guess that's just the way it goes because ain't nobody doing anything about it."
"We kind of have to add more asphalt, kind of on all sides, to help raise up our roadway a little bit more to match the new crossing grade and that'll be a smoother transition," North Carolina State Department of Transportation Spokesperson Andrew Barksdale said. "We're going to do this as early as this month."
Barksdale said while paving happens, occasional lane closures and detours will occur. No timeline was given on a completion date.
