NORTH CAROLINA -- Do you have a tornado plan for your home and office?

It is important to prepare for severe weather before storms threaten.  When a Tornado Warning is issued, it is too late to make a plan.  A Tornado Warning means a tornado has been spotted or is about to form.  When you hear there is a Tornado Warning, you must take immediate action to protect yourself and your family.

If you live in a sturdy building:

  • Seek shelter on the lowest possible floor in a small, interior room away from windows.
  • Basements, closets, hallways, and windowless bathrooms are all examples of places to shelter.
  • Do not open windows

If you live in a mobile or manufactured home:

  • Get out of your home and seek shelter in a pre-determined sturdy building.
  • Shelter on the lowest floor of that sturdy building in small, interior room away from windows.
  • Even if tied down, mobile homes do not offer protection from a tornado.

If you are caught outside or in your car:

  • If there is time, drive to the nearest sturdy building and seek shelter in a small, interior room away from windows.
  • If there is no building nearby, lie flat in a ditch or low-lying area and cover your head.
  • Do not seek shelter under a highway overpass.  You are safer in a ditch.
  • Do not try to outrun a tornado in your vehicle.
