FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- About 80 children diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes took part in an event that organizers say was the first Diabetics Games held in North Carolina.
- Dozens of children participated in the event
- It was held at Methodist University
- Young athletes competed in 11 athletic contests
The Olympics-style contest was held at Methodist University on Saturday afternoon. The young athletes competed in 11 athletic contests. Along with the physical activity, which is good for kids, organizers wanted to send a message about the skills and determination of these competitors.
"Our children with Type 1 diabetes are always discriminated for the diabetes. They cannot compete in multiple events. And today they're showing that they can do it," said Dr. Brunilda Cordero of Cape Fear Valley Health Systems. Her hospital, Cape Fear Valley Medical Center set the the games.
Medals of gold, silver and bronze were awarded to the top three athletes in each competition. Organizers say they plan to hold the games every year.
