RALEIGH -- The autopsy report for a Raleigh woman, whose husband claims he killed her in his sleep after taking cold medicine, reveals that she was stabbed 123 times.
Shortly after 1:00 a.m. on September 1, Matthew Phelps, 29, called 911 to report the incident. He said it happened after taking cold medicine the night before. According to Phelps, he had dreamed that he'd killed his wife and woke up, covered in blood, to find her lifeless on the floor.
The woman was transported to WakeMed where she was pronounced dead.
In an 11-page autopsy report released Tuesday, the State Medical Examiner's office reported that Lauren Hugelmaier Phelps, 29, had been stabbed 123 times the night she was killed; 44 wounds of the head, 24 wounds of the torso, 17 wounds of the right arm and 38 wounds of the left arm.
Phelps's manner of death has been listed as homicide by "multiple sharp force injuries."
Matthew Phelps has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with her death.
