WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — One of the only hydroponic hop farmers in the country started his own facility in Winston-Salem.
Jason Korht's business, Hyphen Hops, grows hops using nutrients from water instead of soil.
He explained the greenhouse allows for bigger yields and a greater variety.
Korht said he had his first successful harvest in November and is now working on his second harvest, which he will distribute to local breweries in April.
“We're doing something that can't be done outside of a greenhouse in North Carolina. They can grow hops here, but they can only grow certain varieties,” emphasized Korht.
He said this method will allow brewers to be innovative because they can make new and interesting beers with these unique hops.
