GREENSBORO, N.C.-- Temperatures are soaring, and so are the needs of people without a place to cool off.
- A report says more than 9,000 people in the state are experiencing homelessness
- Soap, deodorant, and other resources were given to people in need
- Organizers say more toiletry drives will be held this summer in High Point and Winston-Salem
Last year, reports from Continuums of Care to the U.S. Department Of Housing And Urban Development counted more than 9,000 people in North Carolina are experiencing homelessness.
Greensboro-based organization, Dana Daughtry 180, held its first toiletry drive for those that are homeless. One of the organizers says he knows what it's like to need a helping hand.
“I was actually a homeless addict myself,” said Dana Mac Daughtry Jr. “I’m working on six years clean and I know what it’s like to be down and out and broken. But I also know what it’s like for someone to take the time to give me something and give me a good word of uplifting and encouragement.”
The group passed out soap, deodorant, toothpaste, clothes, and resources for those in need.
Members plan to hold toiletry drives in High Point and Winston-Salem this summer.
