An hourslong standoff in Chatham County ended shortly after midnight when the suspect was shot by deputies, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office said. The suspect fired "hundreds of rounds" at deputies during the standoff, officials said.
Paul Lawrence Rader, 47, faces multiple charges. As of Thursday afternoon, Rader was being treated at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill and is expected to recover from his injuries.
The incident started around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday on Lambert Chapel Road in the Bear Creek community in Chatham County, a rural area about 40 miles southwest of Chapel Hill.
The sheriff’s office said deputies went to the home to serve an involuntary commitment order at the request of family members. When they arrived, deputies said the man started shooting from inside a trailer on the property.
“Over the course of the standoff, hundreds of rounds were discharged, including shots fired directly at law enforcement officers,” the sheriff's office said in a news release.
"Two Chatham County deputies returned fire during the incident, once early on and again near the end of the standoff, which concluded shortly after midnight on May 22," the sheriff's office said.
The standoff ended after about nine hours, officials said, when the suspect was shot.
No deputies were injured during the shootout.
“This was an extremely dangerous and unpredictable situation that could have ended very differently,” Sheriff Mike Roberson said. “I’m grateful that our deputies remained calm under pressure and followed their training to protect themselves and others. We also greatly appreciate the assistance of our partner agencies, who helped bring this incident to a resolution.”
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating, which is standard procedure in any shooting involving officers.
