HARMONY, N.C. — A deputy with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office shot a man outside a Family Dollar in Harmony Monday afternoon, after, authorities said, he refused to drop a weapon and tried to enter the store.
The sheriff's office said Tuesday that Daniel Glenn Brown, 33, of Harmony, will be charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and that the warrant will be served once Brown is released from medical care.
The shooting happened just after 3:30 p.m. at the Family Dollar on Harmony Highway.
According to Sheriff Darren Campbell, a concerned family member had called law enforcement about the man’s welfare. When a deputy arrived at the scene, he found the suspect trying to walk into the store while carrying what was described as an “edged weapon,” the sheriff said.
The deputy pulled his vehicle in front of the entrance in an effort to block the suspect from going inside, where customers were shopping, according to a news release from the sheriff's office.
Investigators said the suspect ignored repeated commands to drop the weapon. The officer used a Taser, but didn’t stop the suspect, officials said. As the man continued moving toward the entrance, the deputy fired his gun, hitting the suspect.
The man was taken to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem and is reported to be in stable condition, the sheriff said. The deputy was not hurt.
Sheriff Campbell said he contacted the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation to review the shooting, which is standard protocol in these cases. The deputy has been placed on paid leave while an internal review is underway.
“Our deputies are trained to make split-second decisions in the interest of public safety,” Campbell said. “In this case, the deputy prevented an armed individual from entering a store with innocent customers.”
Harmony is a small town about 60 miles north of Charlotte.
The sheriff’s office said more details will be released as they become available.
