A Lenoir day care has been ordered to close and a worker has been charged in connection with the death Monday of 16-month-old child.
Alexandra Lee Coffey, 29, who works at Creative Beginnings of Lenoir, was arrested after authorities received information from the North Carolina Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the Lenoir Police Department said Wednesday.
She is charged with involuntary manslaughter, police said.
The state Department of Health and Human Services on Wednesday ordered Creative Beginnings to close by the end of the day.
The department’s Division of Child Development and Early Education said in a letter to the day care owners that emergency action is needed to protect the health, welfare and safety of children.
Kids Time of Lenoir, which operates Creative Beginnings, may appeal the order.
Coffey was being held Wednesday at the Caldwell County Detention Center with bail set at $500,000.
Police ask anyone with information in the case to contact the department at 828-757-2100 or Crime Stoppers at 828-758-8300.
