CHARLOTTE, N.C. — North Carolina returns to the international spotlight for the 2025 PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte.

What You Need To Know

  • PGA of America estimates the PGA Championship will bring 200,000 attendees and $100 million in economic impact

  • Fernanda Read is one of the south Charlotte homeowners who rented out her home for the week

  • Hotels are expected to be at 90% occupancy and short-term rental sites say more people are interested in homes in the area during the event

According to PGA of America, 156 of the world’s best golfers are in the Queen City.

The city hosted this event in 2017, bringing thousands of attendees and millions in economic impact.

Some south Charlotte homeowners, including Fernanda Read, who are in close proximity to Quail Hollow, are renting out their houses for this tournament.

Last week, Read was adding the final touches to her home before the arrival of four guests, including one golfer.

She listed her home on an online platform called Rent Like a Champion

Read, who works in real estate, said the idea came from a book.

“I’ve always had the love for the real estate market, and it got me thinking, why not make money with your own house as well, right? Versus just with the other ones that I own and manage,” Read said.

The PGA Championship, one of the four men’s major tournaments, is expected to draw 200,000 with nearby hotels exceeding 90% occupancy.

“It’s great for the economy. It's great for the city. It's great for us, for people like us that can provide a comfortable home, hopefully for these people,” Read said.

PGA of America anticipates the economic impact exceeding $100 million and creating over 1,000 temporary jobs.

Read said it already gets busy with other golf tournaments at Quail Hollow.

“There's just so much activity. It just it becomes so lively so to me that's like it's great for everybody, right? Restaurants that are packed, especially around here,” Read said.

She’s already thinking about future opportunities to rent out her home.

“We would love to do it again and also have another chance to go on vacation,” Read said.

Read went on a family trip out of the country while her temporary tenants stayed in her home.

The IRS minimal rental use that allows you to rent your residence for fewer than 15 days without having to report the rental income or deduct any rental expenses was a big draw for Read to list her home for a short-term stay.

According to Airbnb, searches for Charlotte properties have increased over 30% during the PGA Championship compared with around the same time last year.

Vrbo said there is a 25% increase in searches for vacation rentals during the event compared with the week before.
