CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte City Council voted in closed session Monday night on a six-figure settlement to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings over threatening text messages from a former councilmember.
Tariq Bokhari, who resigned from the council last month to work for the Trump administration, allegedly told Jennings in those texts he would “cripple his legacy.”
A preemptive settlement of a potential police chief lawsuit was voted on by council members Monday during a closed session, according to WFAE.
They said the dispute started over Bokhari’s push to allow CMPD officers to wear outer carrier protective vests last year.
Jennings was reportedly upset with the way the council handled the threats, failing to publicly address the incident or censure Bokhari.
Those familiar with the situation believe the settlement could top $100,000. Jennings has yet to file a lawsuit.
