TOLEDO, Ohio — If you get a call from the sheriff's department, it may not be them.

The Toledo Police Department is warning of scams calls where the caller claims to be from the sheriff's department, saying they've missing federal jury duty and there's a warrant out for their arrest. 

Then, the caller provides fake case numbers and warns the resident that if they go to the courthouse, they'll be arrested. Instead, they should pay immediately to avoid jail time. 

"This is a SCAM. Law enforcement agencies, including the Toledo Police Department, will never call to demand money or threaten arrest over the phone," Toledo police wrote in a post on X.

Toledo police advise residents that if they receive this call to not give out personal or payment info. They should end the call immediately, and then report the call to local law enforcement. 

Residents can visit the FBI's website to report the scam to the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
