Keolu Drive on Oahu’s Windward side is set for major improvements and the City and County of Honolulu’s Department of Transportation Services is asking for the community’s input.

What You Need To Know

  • The improvements will focus on Keolu Drive and portions of Wanaʻao Road, Awakea Road, Ka Awakea Road, and Paukū Street

  • The first Community Workshop for the Keolu Drive Complete Streets Project will be held on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kaʻelepulu Elementary School

Keolu Drive is a crucial street that runs through Enchanted Lake in Kailua. Along the street are several schools and community spots. However, the street was primarily designed for vehicular traffic, making it potentially unsafe for people walking and biking. DTS said drivers often speed, kids biking to school do not have connected or protected facilities, and crosswalks are hard to navigate.

The county agency started rendering designs to improve pedestrian and bicycle safety and mobility on Keolu Drive and safely connected Keolu Drive to Kailua Road via pedestrian and bicycle safety improvements.

The improvements will focus on Keolu Drive and portions of Wanaʻao Road, Awakea Road, Ka Awakea Road, and Paukū Street.

Honolulu Complete Streets will hold the first Community Workshop for the Keolu Drive Complete Streets Project on Thursday from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Kaʻelepulu Elementary School, 530 Keolu Drive.

For more information, please visit the Kailua Complete Streets webpage. Honolulu Complete Streets will record the meeting and share it on their website for people unable to attend.
