Several pythons were found in an Elizabeth City neighborhood this week, authorities say, but no one seems to know how they got there.

The snakes, nonvenomous and believed to be someone's pets, were found in the Stockbridge community.

Officials are investigating where the snakes came from and whether the release was accidental or intentional.

The Burmese python is an invasive species in Florida, and are found primarily in and around the Everglades ecosystem in south Florida, wildlife officials say.

There could be more pythons on the loose, and the Pasquotank County Sheriff's Office is asking anyone who finds one to contact deputies at 252-338-2191.

Deputies are working to rehome the snakes, as they will not survive in the wild in North Carolina.
