WORCESTER, Mass. – If you haven’t filed your taxes yet, you may be eligible to access a new user-friendly program. A pilot program allows some Massachusetts and New Hampshire residents to file their tax returns directly with the IRS for free.

The Commonwealth is one of 12 states included in the Direct File system. Taxpayers who have simple W2s and claim a standard deduction may be eligible to use it this tax season.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, who has long been an advocate for this kind of program, said Friday that right now, people spend several hours and hundreds of dollars filing their taxes.

“The IRS is asking people for feedback after they use it because they want to do two things: They want to get it right; they want to make sure it's even easier next year; and they want to be able to expand it to more people,” said Warren. “This is government doing the right thing, it's government trying to cut costs for working families. It's government not on the side of some giant corporation that can lobby Congress, it’s government on the side of the people.”

Direct File can only be used to file federal income taxes. Taxpayers will need to file state taxes separately.
