What You Need To Know

Greensboro's first poet laureate is Josephus Thomson III

In his role, he will continue to develop poetry programming in Greensboro

The two-year poetry program is aimed at inspiring the next generation of thought leaders and creatives

It is a title well deserved due to his contributions to the poetry community over the last 20 years.

Thompson's work includes spoken word performances, hosting writing workshops, lecturing, teaching and authorship.

He says expressing himself through his craft has been his passion for as long as he can remember.

“We like to feel like our voices are needed and important, and our voice matters," Thompson said.

So he set out to share his experience and engage the youth through programs like the Poetry Project, which is a literary workshop for teens, as well as the poetry café, an open mic and nationally syndicated radio show.

Thompson also founded The Gate City Youth Slam Team in Greensboro.

He said he is honored that his work in the community has been recognized.

“I am just elated to be appreciated on a level where the city is selecting you, and now you get a title to go with what you have been doing all of this time,” Thompson explained.

During his two-year term, Thompson will continue to develop poetry programming in Greensboro.
