Tropical Storm Ophelia started out as a low pressure system earlier in the week and developed into a tropical storm by Friday.

Ophelia made landfall about 6:15 a.m. Saturday in Emerald Isle Beach as a 70 mph tropical storm, only 4 mph short of hurricane status, according to Spectrum News 1's weather team.

The storm brought rain bands and heavy winds and churned up rough surf conditions as it moved in. It also caused scattered power outages, with totals swelling to over 50,000 Saturday morning.

The system is expected to continue heading north through the state Saturday.
